Frequently Asked Questions

What is HackYSU?

HackYSU is a hackathon, an event where students come together to Learn, Create, and Network with each other and businesses.

Where and when is HackYSU?

The first HackYSU was April 17th-19th 2015. It lasted Friday night to Sunday afternoon. The next HackYSU should take place about a year from that date and have a similar format.

What do people do at hackathons?

Students will have 36 hours to create anything they want – software, hardware, a business plan, art, a design, anything – in the pursuit of knowledge, glory, and prizes. Hacks will be exhibited science fair style in a showcase at the end of the weekend.

Does it cost anything to participate?

Nope! Not only is HackYSU free, but all your meals during the event are on us thanks to our amazing sponsors. You'll probably leave the event with some awesome free swag too.

Though travel reimbursements were not avaliable last year, we want to be able to reimburse travelers next year!

How do I register?

Any student currently enrolled or was enrolled in the current school year from any upper education institution or high school can register.

We weren't able to host minors last year, but we hope to be able to next year!

Are there prizes?

Yep! Besides first through third place prizes for the best overall hacks we'll also have category prizes thanks to our awesome sponsors. But really, it's not about winning as much as it's about learning, creating, and networking.

Did we mention some of our sponsors are looking for interns?

Do I need to be able to code?

No! Not only is HackYSU not a programming-only event (though there will be a lot of it), it is an educational experience. No matter what your experience, you are welcome here. Everyone is invited to expand their skill set and make something awesome.

We'll have mentors around helping students with their hacks, hardware like Oculus Rifts to borrow and hack on (courtesy of Major League Hacking), and a team building session where you can meet some awesome people who'll either help get you on your feet or compliment your abilities.

What are the rules?

Hackers must abide by Major League Hacking's code of conduct.

Also, teams must consist of 4 or less hackers, and all projects must be created at the hackathon to qualify for prizes. Feel free to plan a bit at home, but it wouldn't be fair if you have a head start!

What should I bring?

Bring your student ID (you'll need it to get in), laptop, chargers, and everything you need to be a decent human being for 36 hours. That includes toiletries and your own sleeping materials.
